KUAC 89.9 FM And General Protection Fault

INFORMATION PAGE

Here is a bit more in-depth information about KUAC 89.9 FM and that of our computer show, "General Protection Fault". This show deals with computer issues and concerns of importance to University of Alaska students, Alaskan consumers, technology junkies and computer professionals. My name is Jeremy Smith and I am the producer and host of this radio show.

KUAC-FM transmits on 89.9 MHz at 38,000 watts from Ester Dome just west of Fairbanks. In our local Fairbanks market of 80,000 possible listeners, many of our supporters come from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.  KUAC is rebroadcast on translators in Nome, Circle, Nenana, Healy, Delta Junction, Central, Tok, Circle Hot Springs and Eagle. Through this network of transmitters, the station reaches most of the population throughout Interior Alaska. KUAC and General Protection Fault are also carried statewide on Community Radio of Alaska (CRA).

CRA is a collection of stations which exchange programs that would otherwise be unavailable to them. This network of broadcasters reaches Alaskans from Angoon to Valdez, adding an even larger possible audience. Member stations include KTNA Talkeetna, KXKM McCarthy, KHNS Haines and KZPA Fort Yukon to name a few. KUAC is also carried via satellite, and is picked up in various communities around the state including Prudhoe Bay and Nome. These satellite communities either broadcast over translators (Nome) or are carried on the local cable system (Prudhoe). In some communities KUAC is the sole broadcasting station, which makes it the virtual voice of the outside world. This allows General Protection Fault to be an exclusive outlet of computer news, views, and product reviews that will reach a large portion of Alaska’s population.

Our show is focused at the male listener, between the ages of 12-30. Surprisingly enough, through phone calls and e-mails, we have learned that members (both male and female) from other age groups (35-55 age bracket)  are anticipating each weekly installment. Many parents have also called in during our tech support segments to figure out what their children already know!

This show has many correspondents, including myself, who are well versed in computers and their subsequent operation. The show is divided into six parts: computer news, Checking In From The Cyberscene, product reviews, interviews, Computers 101 and call-in questions. In the first segment, we report on developments in the computer industry and offer our own slightly off-base commentary. Carl Lindemann produces our second segment (Checking In From The Cyberscene), which is a website review drop-in module. Product reviews are where we choose a product (be it software or hardware) and analyze its pros and cons. We also routinely interview developers and local professionals on new technologies or products which will soon or are presently being unleashed upon an unsuspecting public. Computers 101 is a short feature which educates the listener on many basic computer issues. An explanation of how a hard drive works or tips & tricks that would make Windows 98 run more efficiently are covered in this segment. Our final section, tech call-in questions, features a local computer expert fielding computer questions from listeners across the state.

General Protection Fault airs weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 - 7pm every 1st and 3rd week. The show grows to a full hour (from 6:30 to-7:30pm) every 2nd, 4th and 5th Tuesday. Cassette copies of General Protection Fault are available upon request.
